NAMEPA Honors Founding Chairman Clay Maitland

Clay Maitland was honored with the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) Lifetime Achievement Award. Over the past years, Maitland has many industry accomplishments including being the co-founder of NAMEPA 10 years ago.

Maitland has worked in the shipping industry since graduation from law school in 1968. He has been employed by International Registries, Inc. for over 40 years and is now a managing partner and an owner of the company. Prior to that, Maitland held similar positions with the maritime administration of the Republic of Liberia.

What is more, Maitland has been involved with a number of philanthropic and professional associations connected with the ship industry. He is on the boards of the Maritime Industry Museum, at Fort Schuyler (SUNY Maritime College) and the King’s Point Maritime Museum, at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Also, he is a member of many foundations and associations in the industry.

"One of the risks inherent in accepting this award is the notion that I am ready to sail off into the sunset”, stated Maitland. “Nothing could be farther than the truth, as I will demonstrate when we gather in 10 years to celebrate NAMEPA’s 20th Anniversary!”

The 10th anniversary of NAMEPA will be held aboard the Hornblower Infinity docked at Pier 40 on October 26 in New York. There will be an Annual Awards Dinner to recognize award winners for all  categories. The dinner will follow a daylong conference “Back to the Future in Shipping.”
